Do you think it is fair that previously recorded artists get to be American Idol contestants?

In Season 7, do you think it is fair that previously recorded contestants get to perform on American Idol? In this season, you probably heard that Carly Smithton, the Irish girl, once had a record deal and one of the male contestants played in a teenie bopper band like 8 years ago. And there are a few others. I personally think that they already had their chance and the show should give people that never had the opportunity to show their talents. What do you think? And why do you think American Idol are letting these people on the show?

I'm okay with the boy who has a bit of experience when he was young, but I'm not okay with Carly. I read that she put out an album that the recording company spent millions on. She also made a $250,000 music video. And her cd only sold in the 100-area, making about $5000. So I would say she had her chance, people weren't interested, and that's not going to change just because she's on American Idol... I mean, she really had her chance.

no i dont
I could care less...it isn't as though any of them will truly be "the next big thing".......
no, they already had their chance. let someone else have the spotlight!
i believe you are right. there are people who arecoming from NOTHING on that show that deserve to have a fair shot in the spotlight...not have their shot overshadowed by someone who's already made music professionally before
They don't seem to be better than any of the others, so I guess it's okay.
I don't think it's fair to the others. I agree with you. You've had your chance, you weren't good enough then, you blew it, now step aside and let someone else have a go at it. I read an article somewhere (I think on Yahoo) that said that it's happened before. Kelly Clarkson had released a recording prior to winning American Idol.

Besides...I think the African American girl that was the single mom, I wish I could remember her name. Her little girl was born with some severe health problems and she wanted to win so that she could provide for her better? They cut her from the second round....anyway....she was better than half of the girls they've got up there right now. Who's to say she wouldn't have had a better shot if contestants with a non-amateur background banned from trying out?
I don't care and I doubt they do

American Idol just cares about getting it's ratings above Dancing With the Stars
I think it's perfectly reasonable. They are looking for an artist who will sell a lot of records. It is perfectly fair, they choose the best singers who audition. Maybe those who haven't "had a chance" haven't gotten that chance for a reason- just not quite good enough.
Totally unfair for everyone involved
It doesn't bother me. As long as those were the rules before everyone auditioned and they didn't change them along the way.

Personally I don't think it matters either way - it all has to do with talent, personality and likability. Just because you have had a previous record deal doesn't guarantee you will make it further.
Carly Smithsons album in 2001 was a flop. she was younger than. If you watched the females sing the other night, she mentioned the album she made before she sang. Your right, she had her chance why not give her a second. She can be voted off also.
I dont think it is going to make that much of a difference. I dont see any of them really standing out above the rest like they seem to have done in seasons past Maybe after they settle into the routine a little better will we start to hear someone pull out ahead.
yeah itz unfair! =[
I don't thnk its fair and it is suppose to be for singers that are trying to get a break and if the people already had a break, that's their problem and they don't belong on this show.
Actually I agree with Simon that if they didn't already try to make it in the business, they don't deserve to be there. I'd rather see someone win who wanted this forever and tried everything they could to make it, than for it to go to someone who never thought of being a singer and just auditioned on a whim, for lack of anything else to do. I'd think they'd appreciate it more.
